Last January, a disabled friend of mine with severe mobility issues obtained a new power wheelchair from Preferred Homecare, a company she is forced to use due to a monopoly contract with her insurance company, Mercy Care of Arizona.  Almost immediately, the wheelchair started having problems maintaining a charge; and last week (early August), it completely stopped working.  Even though the wheelchair has only been in my friend's possession for 8 months and should resonably be covered by warrenty, Preferred is stating that it will take a minimum of 10 to 12 weeks to repair it and may require up to 6 months.  They also told her that they have no loaner chairs available.

I'm sorry, but this is beyond ludricous.  My friend is too badly impaired to use a manual chair and cannot even do her routine activities of daily living without the power one.  Also, whereas there are many loan banks and nonprofits providing manual wheelchairs at little or no cost, none provide power chairs.  Just how is my friend suppose to survive for all this time period?  She lives alone in an apartment, has no family and receives no home health care.  We, her friends, can only do so much.  If her chair is so defective that it truly would take that long to fix, why won't Preferred do the ethical thing and give her a different chair?  It's sickening to encounter a company that so obviously cares more about profit than lives.
