Won eBay auction total of $806 on 4/4/2005. PayPal'd payment in full on 4/4/2005 (unfortunately drawn from checking account, always use credit card for PayPal). NEVER received merchandise! Filed PayPal claim, and they recovered only $175. Waiting for "SquareTrade" claim, but not holding my breath. Several other eBay buyers were swindled too, at least 8 that I know of.

Thanks for the thoughts. I figure over the last 4-5 years I've purchased via eBay about $1800 worth of stuff, maybe saving 20% over what I may have paid elsewhere. I've probably sold maybe $200. So, looking at it that way, it's like losing almost half of what I've spent. You're right, eBay is risky, and this has definitely been an eye opener for me. I'm not sure about purchasing on eBay in the future, I don't think so. So far, the eBay/PayPal/SquareTrade guarantees haven't delivered as promised. I think I'll just go to Best Buy.....

So, tell me, are you ahead or behind by using ebay?

Personally, I have never used ebay. I'm afraid of getting ripped off. Plain and simple. I figure all the stuff on there is junk. Why would anybody sell a worthwhile item at an ebay discounted price? It's the old story. If it sounds too good, it's a fraud. Let's not forget that auction fraud is the leading type of internet scam. Besides, I want to see and examine what I buy, before I hand over my money. I do go to the ebay motors page. It's so funny. The crooks say bid with confidence. Yet, at the bottom they also say no warranties of any kind, as is-where is. How the hell can I be confident in that situation? And, that just covers the mis-represented items. What about the frauds who take a photo from the internet and slap it up on the auctions? They never intend to send anything at all. Complete fraud! I'll be honest. I have a close friend who sells on ebay. He insists that the process works. He swears up and down that ebay polices the auction site. He also claims that ebay will refund for all lost money. Of course, there are a hundred complaints here that say otherwise! Personally, I don't trust ebay. I doubt I ever will. I live near Los Angeles. So, what the hell do I need to be sending my money clear across the country for? Everything I could ever want is right here. My question for you Ken is, all together, has ebay saved you money, or cost you money? Losing $800 is bound to hurt. Are you planning to go back? And, were you able to save any money in the past that would make up for the $800 loss now? I figure that ebay is just another way to cheat innocent and trusting buyers. But, I've never bought anything. So, what's your impression?
