I am very familiar with Telecheck having operated several restaurantw which contracted their collection services. Clearly, as is stated in their contract with their merchants, the merchant must provide specific information on the check for the check to be guaranteed. State laws may vary, but, as in Minnesota, a check is "prima facie" evidence of the writers intent ONLY if it posseses their name, address, telephone number AND state or federal identification written on the face of the check. Telecheck uses these guidelines for their guarantee. Where any one of these bits of info is missing, they will pay the merchant only if they are successful at collecting the debt. As a business owner, you need to make certain that those handling your cash register get each check marked up appropriately AND you cross reference each check to the "DO NOT ACCEPT" letter Telecheck sends out to their member merchants weekly. Do your due diligence and protect the assets of your company. Telecheck isn't responsible for your cash handler's failure to follow their guarantee guidelines.
