Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
Was looking to buy a gift for my Grandson for his birthday. Knew what I wanted to buy so thought I would check out Walmart's web site. Item was listed for $38.88...I went to Walmart the following morning.

Found the item but it was selling for $59.96...I could not believe it and went to the customer service desk. Told her what I had discovered. Was told that they do not honor the website prices...that every WalMart was different with different prices.

I just think that this is wrong...what with all their advertising and slashing prices, only to discover that you will pay what they think you can afford! I work very long hours and could not afford to do this myself but it would be interesting for someone to take a few items and research what a WalMart in a distressed area would charge compared to a WalMart in an affluent area!

In Contrast...I checked out Toys R Us website for same item and low and behold, could get item at store for same price! Guess who got my business? I did pay a little more but I appreciated the honesty!

It's Not only WalMart

#2Consumer Suggestion

WalMart is NOT the ONLY store to do this....all department stores do it....The town I live in not only has multiple Walmart locations, but Target and Meijers as well....The Meijers and Target stores on the West side of town have higher prices than the Meijers and Target locations on the South side of town....Just like the Walmart on the West side of town has lower prices than the Walmart on the East side of town...It all has to do with "demographics" and "market competition"

The stores are price shoppig to get you the lowest price. If all Wal-Marts had the same prices you would end up paying too much. In our area I know which of the 4 Wal-Marts has the best price shoppers and competition. One of the stores has no real competition so all their prices are set at wal-mart corp prices.

NO RIPOFF

#4Consumer Suggestion

Wed, December 17, 2008

This is h ardly a ripoff. As the previous posts state online stores differ from the brick and mortor stores. You also need to realize there is often shipping and handling charges, which many times if you actually look at the total price of what y ou are paying there is no difference. It is all about price comparison just as you would at ANY store, on line or otherwise. It is not a ripoff however! Get a clue. Sometimes I think people just WANT to have something to complain about. Save your complaints for something that is actually IMPORTANT!

This is a common and also rather pointless complaint.

We get these all the time as I work in the electronics area. Our standard response to this now consists of guiding the customer over to our in store online kiosk. Once there, we pull up the item. We then click on the "locate in store" button next to the items price. A window pops up asking you for a zip code and simultaneously informing you that the price is for online and will be different in stores. At that point the customer 99% of the time says, "Oh, well I didn't that." It's not like the fact it's going to cost more is hidden. It's not like we don't have a telephone to ask us how much something is. We in fact get a number of calls from smart shoppers who do check with us first. As for the not price matching the website, why would we? Most of the time the price on the website is actually below the stores cost just to ship the item in. The website, which is actually a completely separate part of the company, gets things at a much greater discount. Is the store supposed to lose money every time you want an online price?

This is a capitalist system

In America we have a capitalist system that, among many other things, means they can charge anything they like. The prices may or may not be the same at different stores and the internet. You can kick and scream all you want but there is nothing illegal about it. It's been going on forever. You have to either shop around or pay what the price is at the store you're in. Of course there are a couple other options. Don't buy it at all complain go to a different companies store which will most likely have the same variations from store to store. If they don't vary and you like that, then stick with them and forget Walmart.

Same Problem here in Findlay Ohio at our 2 Walmarts

I had the same problem here in Findlay, Ohio at the Walmart stores here. We have 2 Walmarts here, one at each end of town. One is near shopping centers, etc. The other is near a smaller shopping complex. Prices on their automotive batteries are different at the two stores. I found out the hard way And found out they do not even honor other Walmart store prices. The one lady working at Walmart even suggested I take the battery back and go and buy it at the other Walmart cheaper. They blame it on the amount of competition a Walmart store has and how they price their products. That is not right and consumers need to shop elsewhere if Walmart has that kind of attitude on pricing items.

I too have had this experience. I was told it was cheaper to buy it from the website, than to just have them honor the website price at the store and that Wal-Mart doesn't honor their website prices. However, the CSR said that if I got the price off another retailer's website, they could honor that. HUH?? I did this with Best Buy and had no problem. I was shopping for an entertainment center from my grandmother and found one for $99 on BB's website. So, I went to our local store and saw it wasn't that price. I found a clerk, told him the problem, he left for moment, came back and gave me the $99 price. Doesn't make sense, does it? Get it together Wal-Mart.

They call it demographics

What you are refering to, that prices are different depending on whether its online or the stores location actually has a name. They call it demographics. You are absolutely right, items in a more affluent neighborhood are priced higher than the identical items in the less affluent neighborhoods. The price can be quite a bit of a difference too. Especially if you are comparing stores that are lets say in New York City as compare to a rural store located in Florida. They do this with all items in the store. Now there are some stores that will honor the online price but then again you will find some that wont. It all depends on the management of that particular store. Dont ever be satisfied with the answer you get from customer service. They are told to quote the policy of the store. They are not given the authority to make exceptions. If you are not satisfied with the answer, demand to speak to a member of management. Not a CSM, which stands for Customer Service Manager, because all they are is glorified cashiers with keys. You need an actual member of management. If you are not satisfied with what the manager tells you, write a letter to the store manager himself, you should get a reply and a good possibility of a gift card for your inconvenience.

Online VS. Stores

Most stores have online sites. Most of those have lower prices than you can't get at any of their stores. The main reason these 'online stores' are cheaper is simply because they do not have the overhead of a consumer shopping store. they have less employees, which means less SSI, workers comp, unemployment etc to cover and with that the prices are cheaper. There are approximately 5 Walmarts within 10 miles of my house and the prices are different at all of them. Why? It mostly depends what's around them. One has a Super K next to it, two others have Targets. The two highest have no major competition, so their prices are higher... It's no different than grocery stores. last year, Giant Eagle sold turkey at 1.17 a pound in cleveland ohio, but if you drove 90 mins south of cleveland, the same turkey sold for .47 cents a pound.
