I signed the contract in 2007 (5 year contract) and figured I was covered under the lawsuit. I called Universal Gas and Electric and told them so. They said, NOPE, you have to pay the $250 dollars. They said, only a handful of people were covered under that lawsuit. I said, WELL, I believe I am one of them! Do I have to file a complaint? He said, do what ever you want, but YOU WILL pay the $250 dollars. I said, I think NOT.
I called The state of Michigan Public Service Commission> 800-292-9555 and they said at first That I would have to pay. But when I explained how they lied and did not give me any information until over 30 days, just a paper to sign. They said, I could file a formal complaint over the phone. GUess what? I DO NOT have to pay the $250 dollars!! YEAHHHHHH When these people come to your door and tell you that you current provider is going to go up 250% and you can get the lower price, if gas goes down, and lie to you like that, then you don't have to pay. I just canceled them, and I am waiting the one or two billing cycles (KEEPING my heat very very very low,Lower then I did last year, because I will be darned if I pay them the kind of money I paid them last yr. while I froze in my own home) The MPSC sent me a letter stating that I DO NOT have to pay that $250 fee. SO PLEASE, file a formal complaint. If the MPSC tries to tell you NO, tell them you want to file a formal complaint. IT is your right as a USA citizen. :) That is what the MPSC is there for. They can not limit your complaint to people of 2007,and 2008 if you have a legal complaint.
HOW dare they try and charge you to switch TO THE SAME COMPANY YOU ARE ALREADY WITH, what a SCAM!!!!

Wow I am sorry to hear about what happened to you. I am also a victim of deceptive marketing from UGE, but I am so weary of door to door sales I tell them to leave ASAP when they come to my door. Also beware, that UGE has changed their name again to JUST Energy. They are operating out of the same office as UGE and commerce in Southfield MI. I've tried everything to get out of the contract, phone calls, sending them letters, BBB, and I filed a complaint with the Michigan consumer services protection agency. All were a dead end. The MCSP was the most promising as they had filed a legal action against UGE for people with cases like ours, but that ruling only applied to people who filed an official complaint between 2007 and 2008. Sorry you got hit twice, good luck. I for one am going to pay their extortion fee before my gas bill goes up again.
