i have been with universal gas and electric for almost 4 years now and i have been waiting for the 5 years to be up so i can get out of this bogus contract. when i signed up for this i was on the understanding that this would benefit me but all it has done was hurt me in more ways then one. I am a single mother of 3 i live in subsidized housing threw the government, and i also receive assistance threw the state. Now about two years ago i had called and talked to a lady from their and i told her my situation and she told me if i send them a copy of my housing agreement stating it was government housing, and also send them something from my caseworker stating i received state assistance, they would waive the $250.00 cancellation fee. now again i am a single mother of 3 and i work full time so it took me about 3 weeks to get everything together that i needed. so i called back to make sure that when i send this info everything would be squared away and my account with them would be canceled and the lady on the other end told me there was no such thing so i demanded to talk to her supervisor when the supervisor got on the line she said that that was a limited time offer that they were doing and they are not doing it anymore i was irate..
 
   so the second time i tried to get out was about one year ago i had another company come to me telling i could get out of this program that all i had to do was sign up with them and they would take care of the rest. but when all was said and done i got a letter from Universal stating that they were going to charge me $250.00. so i canceled with the so called company that could help me and asked universal to send me a copy of my current contract for my records when i got it in the mail i filed the envelope i did not even open it i had no reason to.

just today i had another company call me about having my account switch to them you don't sign any contracts she don't need a copy of a bill she don't need none of my personal info just my POD # off my bill and you can cancel at any time with NO FEE.. but before we went into anything i had a ton of questions to ask about price of mcf's and billing and price adjusting and contracts and so on and so forth. i made sure i covered everything, so there we are talking about prices and i go get my contract out of my filing cabinet and i open it up but i did not see any contract, what i seen seemed to be a copy of a contract but no where on there was my signature they had my name typed in. but after over looking it i realized  it was not a contract it was a welcome letter for another 5 years. now i am very upset because all this time i thought i only had a little over a year to go and they went and signed me up for another 5 years with out as much as a phone call so i am not sure what happened or why i was signed up when i reality i was trying to get out... last year when i talked to them about canceling and they said i would have to pay the $250. no matter what. i asked them to send me a copy of my current contract and they sent me a new contract is that even legal if i did not verbally agree or sign any papers and what can i do if it happened a year ago.   please some one help i just want it gone its been a burden on my life.
